Trails & Parks

Skaters zoom around the Southside on a Friday Night SkateThe following are great locations for skating. The Pittsburgh area is blessed with many parks and trails that we can take advantage of. Look for links to maps soon as this section grows!

  • Riverlife Task Force hosts a great park map of the Three Rivers Park here. This park, when complete will allow you to travel from the West End Bridge, up the Mon to the Hot Metal Bridge, back through Point State Park, up to the 31st Street Bridge and back to the West End and beyond those points in several directions along a system of trails. The completion date is 2020 but much of the trail system is already in place, the Hot Metal Bridge crossing should be done fairly soon and the West End Pedestrian Crossing design has been chosen which is very exciting.
  • The Eliza Furnace Trail - (Google map view of trail head )
  • Localhikes.com has this article about the trail. It is geared towards hikers but gives a good description of the trail.
  • Here is an article from the Post Gazette written on the day the trail was opened.
  • Allegheny County Parks Website has all kinds of information about the North and South Parks.

Skate Friendly Urban Areas

Skaters cross the new Hot Metal Pedestrian Bridge from the Eliza Furnance Trail to the SouthsideA great many skaters love to skate the streets as well as urban areas such as plazas and even parking garages. Though TRIC knows of no parking garages that allow skaters to use them, many of the areas listed in this section have a lot of parking garages - skate them at your own risk as they are very dangerous. With the number of universities in Oakland and large corporate plazas in downtown, urban skaters with aggressive tendencies will not have far to go without finding a nice rail or set of stairs to enjoy. These areas serve as a very fun backdrop to recreational skaters as well, and many of the organized skates that TRIC offers travel through these areas.

  • Friends of the Riverfront offers a great .PDF that shows some of Pittsburgh's streets that are marked for shared access. This includes some trail listings though to date some of the trails are not paved.
  • Downtown Pittsburgh
  • Oakland
  • Shadyside

Indoor Skating

Though a number of great rinks are closing or have closed, the Pittsburgh area still is home to a number of great rinks.

Skaters enjoying a great evening skatePittsburgh Rinks:

Neville Island Roller Dome - The Neville Island Roller Dome is a great rink, opened in 1948 and still owned and operated by the two brothers who opened it. The rink has a great old organ that they still play during sessions. If you are looking for a great rink in Pittsburgh check out the Neville Island Roller Dome.

Metro Rinks:

www.valleyskate.com - The Valley Skate Center in Denora PA is one of Western Pennsylvania's nicest rinks and is only 45 minutes south of Pittsburgh.

Miscellaneous

If you know of any other areas that are great to skate in other municipalities, please use the contact page to let us know!

Skaters Bill and Dori at the annual WV Brew Skate (2007)Wheeling WV - Wheeling has miles of health trails that run from it's southern border along the Ohio river north of the city to the city of Warwood and even beyond Warwoods northern borders. As well there is a trail that heads to the suburban areas of Woodsdale and Elm Grove that goes through an old train tunnel. The trails are well kept but be careful in the tunnel as there is often a great deal of water and some ruts due in part to the water. All in all the trails and even some of the streets are great for skating and there is talk of a skate park for aggressive skaters and skate boarders. There are no organized skates there but there are plenty of friendly people on the trails and some good restaurants and public parks to check out.

Presque Isle State Park (ERIE) - Erie, PA is home to Presque Isle State Park offers a 13.5 mile mostly flat trail that is well marked and loaded with restrooms and water stops. The scenery can't be beat and the trail is well maintained. If you are in the Erie area and have time you won't want to miss the opportunity to skate one of the state's best parks.

Morgantown WV - Mo' town offers a nice selection of scenic trails along the Mon River and Decker's Creek. Though a great many more miles of trail are available for bikers and joggers in the form of crushed limestone trails but there is certainly a good time to be had in Morgantown if you bring your blades along.
