TRIC has conducted beginner lessons on the first Sunday of each month for many years but new for 2008 we've teamed up with Venture Outdoors to offer our Sunday skate clinics and we've added quite a bit to them. In years past we have always offered quick lessons to any skater who has shown up on the trail but this year, with the help of Venture Outdoors, we are offering lessons and then some. We've added a short skate down the trail and more individualized attention. Folks are still welcome to come see us on the first Sunday of each month at 11:30AM at the Eliza Furnace Trail Head (Greenfield End). The lessons this year are more in line with those that we offer each Wed night at the Liberty School in Shadyside. They consist of a brief stop and start lesson and some follow up where we watch each skater and give them a chance to skate around the parking lot while we watch and correct any issues with equipment, form, and technique. Once the skaters are ready we take them on a short skate along the Eliza Furnace Trail and may even venture to the Southside via the Hot Metal Bridge. Thanks to Venture Outdoors for teaming up with us for this years Sunday skate lessons! |

Do you have what it takes? If you have not heard of the Steel City Derby Demons then you're missing out on one of Pittsburgh's most exciting and fun groups to spring up in the past several years. The derby has a long and sordid past, and no, I'm not talking about the athletes, well then again . . . just playing. From it's beginnings the sport was exploitative but in recent years women have been instrumental in taking ownership of the sport and making it as complex and beautiful as the athletes that fill it's ranks. It's no longer about showing off girls in tight outfits, it's about all those complex things that women do, think and feel that men don't really get. Like being strong and sexy and all types of different things at the same time. You know - girl stuff. The flat track that these ladies skate on takes skill and high levels of energy to compete on. This is no place for powder-puffs and the faint-of-heart. If you have any doubts about the passion and intensity as well as raw talent, work-ethic, and competitiveness of these athletes then stop gawking at their boobs and start watching the match - any doubts will soon vanish. TRIC is happy to share the trails and streets with quad skaters and the frighteningly helliciouses skills of the Steel City Derby Demons helps frighten and brighten Pittsburgh's skating future. Oh yeah - and btw, if you want to join the Steel City Derby Demons or just want to see a really awesome sporting event then check out their website: http://www.steelcityderbydemons.com/ |

New 2008 TRIC shirts are ready!
Come out to any skate - here is the design (on the actual shirts) We have blue ones and pink ones. Shown on left the pink one is displayed front up and the blue one is what the back looks like. To get your shirt you have to join (which costs about as much as a shirt normally would). The design on the back is meant to celebrate the 250th birthday of the city of Pittsburgh. It features an outline of Ft. Pitt with a silhouette of the modern skyline. Flanking the fort and the city are two busts. The figure on the left is a laborer with a helmet and below him we see steel being poured. The other figure is a skater and below him is a skate. In the center of the fort is the Pittsburgh 250 logo. Above it all is T-R-I-C is bold outlined letters. Under the design is the web address - SkatePittsburgh.com and the ads of our two shirt sponsors Dowd Insurance and Wolbert's Auto Body. The design on the front is the Ft. Pitt, the silhouette of the city, T-R-I-C, the web address, and the motto -We skate everything but the rivers! Get your 2008 shirt today at any weekly skate! |

Pop City Media's latest issue features a member's perspective piece about TRIC. Cathy Bazán-Arias was interviewed and the publication sent a photographer to the Sunday morning skate to capture a few shots of us. Though the article doesn't focus just on skating alone but rather on the alternatives to health clubs and "mainstream" forms of exercise TRIC does take up the bulk of the feature and there are three photos of skaters in the piece. Please read the article here:
If you have never heard of Pop City, (and you should have), they are a Pittsburgh based online publication focusing on the city and metro area. The features in Pop City are informative, not too in-depth but very enjoyable reads about the development and redevelopment in and around Pittsburgh as well as the people who are making things happen, and the things that make the city a great place to live, work, and play. They will deliver their weekly set of articles as well as links to other development news and links to stories about Pittsburgh in the national and international media on Wednesdays to your favorite inbox if you would like them too. They also have an RSS option for those who like to aggregate their news and info or you can do things the old fashion way and remember that their articles come out every Wed. Oh and did I mention that the publication is FREE? Check out Pop City today at: |

Great news for skaters in and around Bloomfield! The city is going to put in the bike lanes on Liberty Ave. as proposed last year. They will run from 34th St. to Baum Blvd. The work will begin in a few weeks and will include "Share the road" signage. This has the potential to be a very good thing for TRIC and other skaters as well as the bikers in Pittsburgh. We owe the folks at Bike Pittsburgh a big thank you for working with the city to bring this to fruition. There are plans to study other roads in the city and eventually develop more bike lanes based on things like use by cyclist, traffic, and road width. For more info check out the article in the PG: |

A few months back I reported to you that the Golden Triangle Bike and Blade shop has reopened. John Stanicar and I stopped at the shop on Sunday May 20th and spoke with the new owners. The shop looks great and the new owners report brisk rental numbers on the bike side of the business but said they've not gotten any skate rentals yet. I've had several inquires about the shop and am glad to report that they have all new bikes and mostly new skates. There were a couple of pairs of older model Rollerblades that they bought with the shop from the previous owners but there were not enough to meet their expected demand. If you are looking for a way to try out skating and don't yet own a pair renting them from GTBB is a great option. They are open 6 days a week, closed Monday but the hours vary so call ahead first: 412 600-0675. They currently have a great selection of Diamond Back bikes. They even have some tandem bikes. I am not sure of the makes or models of skates they have or if they will be carrying any other skate accessories. Currently they have a small selection of bike gear; horns, mirrors, seats, and the like. They also have some snack food and drinks. If you are not sure how to find the GTBB they are located at the downtown end of the Eliza Furnace Trail near 1st Ave and the T. TRIC looks forward to working with the new owners to meet some joint goals and help to develop an even stronger skating culture here in Pittsburgh. Once again the phone number for the Golden Triangle Bike and Blade Shop is 412 600-0675. |

In case the blooming flowers, the budding trees, the warmth in the air, the days getting longer, and the construction nightmares popping up everywhere didn't clue you in; it's springtime in Pittsburgh again.
This is traditionally the time when people come out of their homes with the intentions to find something to do outside. The nice warm weather is still new enough that people have not yet pulled the curtains, cranked the AC, and refused to go out between the hours of 10am and 5pm.
To that end the Three Rivers Inline Club and just about every other outdoors recreation group in and around Pittsburgh will be congregating on the North Shore this Sat. May 18th for the Venture Outdoors Festival.
In the event that you have never heard of Venture Outdoors or of the Venture Outdoors Festival let me lay it on you.
Venture Outdoors, or "VO" is a local group that participate in a wide variety of outdoor activities and since 2001 have been working towards creating a cohesive network out of the different outdoor recreational groups in the area.
The Ventures Outdoors Festival (VOF) is Venture Outdoors' showcase of all the great groups and activities that a person can find in and around Pittsburgh, Western PA, Eastern Ohio, and Northern West Virginia. The Pittsburgh area is full of groups like TRIC, Kayak Pittsburgh, Bike Pittsburgh, and even the Western PA Mushroom Club. The VOF is a great way to discover these groups. There are many ways to enjoy the world around us - the area is full of amazing opportunities to commune with nature, keep in shape, or just have fun with other human beings and VOF is a gateway to the great outdoors. For more information on VOF check out the website. |

The Hills and Thrills planning committee is so happy to announce that we've received more and more great stuff to raffle off at the event. Including 4 tickets to the June 2nd Pirates game from Houston Harbaugh, P.C. and registrations from the Great EsSkate, the Big Apple Roll, I'm told we're being given one for Texas Road Rash and Skate Boston but that is as of right now unconfirmed. Also don't forget the generous gift of two one-hour massages from Dessange Paris and the bagels from Bruggers provided Sat. morning. Always feel free to visit the Hills and Thrills Website for updates. |

I'm not the only person who knows how great the outdoors are in and around Pittsburgh. We live in a world class city with so much stuff to do. In fact there are so many things that this year the organizers of the Venture Outdoors Festival and a few other key player have pitched in to create Great Outdoors Week. More information can be found on their Website at www.greatoutdoorsweek.org and at the Venture Outdoors Website. TRIC has been asked to participate and we are happy to have the chance to do so. Check out their Website and see what great stuff that other active groups are doing. There is a trail clean-up that should not be missed. It is sponsored by REI and we may have a great opportunity to bother them about helping out the club with things like discounts for our members, (it's worth asking for them). TRIC and NSP are working out the plans for what we are going to do to partner and participate in Great Outdoors Week. I will post more information as we get it. |

Friday May 4th went down as TRIC's first ever Media Day. We invited members of the local press out to meet with us and find out all about inline skating, we had a great turn out of skaters, a very excellent skate, and some great weather! The only issue that we fell short on was attracting any media. Oh well . . . there is always next year. There were some mistakes that we made, the press releases may not have made it to all of the media in enough time for them to come out, it is sweeps week, and perhapses there was other news to cover. Whatever the reason is that we did not attract the press out this time we will be seen all season long, we will continue to generate great word of mouth, and we will be at high profile events such as Venture Outdoors Festival. Aside from being places where we can be noticed the club is planning some great activities that should also help us maintain our place in the greater community. We are looking for opportunities to participate in citizen government interactions such as the recent Allegheny County-wide park meeting at the Cork Factory and by working with other local recreational groups to help keep the trails clean. I personally am looking into other means of civil activities that members might enjoy doing. For example I just got back from donating blood. We can donate in the name of the club if we were to set something like that up. I will send an email out and see if there is interest in such a thing very soon. Did you think I wouldn't remember to mention the BBQ?Everyone who attended the first 2007 Bad Terry BBQ had a great time! There was an over abundance of great food, Terry, (I'm told), made some great grilled treats. We raffled off some great stuff to all those members who have registered and paid for their 2007 membership. The prizes were donated to the club by Backstreet Inline, Bont, and eZeefit Booties. Check them all out on the skate products page and tell them thank you! |

Schenley Drive from above Tech Street to Phipps is being repaved. It is torn up as of Tuesday, May 1st as well as portions of Tech Drive near CMU. Use caution while skating in this area. Please send any repavement news to me via the contact page. Also of interest - both Beacon and Bartlett in Sqrl. Hill have been repaved and they look great! Monday and Tuesday skaters are encouraged to take full advantage. |
